It's the first time I've ever seen a car company try to keep their production model as close to the batshit insane concept as I've ever seen, inside and out.
It looks like it came from the year 2034, not 2014. It's on the bleeding edge of automotive technology, but it doesn't throw the jalop baby out the window with the bath water to get us there, like the Prius. Un like the Prius, this will be fun to drive. It's germany's Volt, but inverse; it doesn't ask you to just pay more for the sake of it, just because it needs you to. It asks for six figures because it's worth every penny and more.
It's a concept car for the road. There's no way you're not gonna turn heads everywhere you go cruising around in this thing. If I won the lotto today, my first phone call will be to a BMW sales agent to see if he can get me one. My second phone call will be to a friend to break the news that I won the lotto, but to also share my disappointment in learning that BMW will be sold out of i8s for at least the first half of the year.

If I won the lotto my first call would be to Porsche to get me a 918, Then I would call BMW and offer them enough $ to bump the last guy off the list.

Also, all signs are pointing to it coming full loaded with the latest tech from BMW, standard. HUD; radar/camera cruise, crash avoidance; Next-gen nav/app integration, DAT KEY, Laser Headlights (if DOT approves before launch) etc, etc. With the $7500 tax credit, you're basically end up with price near the base price of a M6/M6 Grancoupe with a LOT more standard tech. I think they know a 3-cylinder, hybrid, sports car is a tough sell at $135k and are sweetening the deal by just throwing in everything.
And some car news site in the past week says there are rumblings that it may be a one year only model, like the 1M Coupe.
